News Release 2007

Reinin’ In The Sun
“Like a hot knife through butter” stated Show Chairman Barb Grimshaw, describing how smoothly the Reining Show in Armstrong unfolded over the long weekend, and praising the team of ten Committee members, who worked smoothly and tirelessly together to produce the first class event. Horses traveled from all parts of BC and Alberta to attend the revival of the popular Reining competition, traditionally held on the August long weekend, with more than one hundred horses laying down 343 runs over the three day period. Exhibitors commented on the “relaxed atmosphere, with an emphasis on fun”, eluding to the free Hot Dogs and Soda offered at The Oasis, (hospitality tent), which lured them back to the riding area Friday night.
Many exhibitors stayed well in to the evening, taking in the Open Reining and Cowhorse classes. The competition continued on Day Two, with the Non Pros vying for NRHA Pewters and Plaques, and culminating with the first go round of the Sun Reiner’s Three Year Old Reining Stakes. Locke Duce, Cochrane, AB, aboard Kathi Fisher’s Pretty N Primed took charge of the class, winning a custom monogrammed sheet, and taking the lead with a 71.5 score. The second go round would see Nicole Brown guide Don Leach’s Ruby Q Chex to a class high score of 72, ultimately tying to win the aggregate of the two runs with Greg Lauder’s Boom Out West. Lauder and Brown elected to save their young horses the stress of a run off, and declared themselves Co-Champions of the event. Brown, from Stony Plain, AB would later in the day wow the audience with her Freestyle presentation, posting a 149 on Leach’s stylish and talented Shiners Q Chex.
Day Three proved to be another beautiful day in the sunny Okanagan, as the competition heated up. Non-Pros, Rookie Professionals, and Pros alike put the hammer down as the Derby classes began. Greg Lauder, Cochrane, AB, piloted Theresa Dykes Hawks Whisper to win the Open Derby, taking home the lion’s share of the $1000 purse, along with a beautiful NRHA Morrison bronze, and the Reinin’ In The Sun custom sheet, mimicking his win the previous day in the Open Reining. The Rookie Professional Derby saw a ride-off for first place between Lachlan Bell and Gee Whiz It Shines and Carmen Teixeira with Hollywood Wishes. Bell scooped the win, claiming a custom designed Show Pad, a RITS monogrammed sheet, and the larger portion of the cash. But it was Stony Plain’s Wendy Williams with her mount Nifty Beginning, who took home the largest loot bag. The team posted a win in the NRHA Ltd. Non Pro Derby, laying claim to a custom made hat generously donated by Vern Elliot of Cowboy’s Choice, Vernon, an NRHA Pewter, and a RITS monogrammed sheet, plus the pay cheque. This win was no less sweet than her triumph in the previous class, NRHA Open Non Pro Derby, which saw Williams take home a beautiful trophy saddle, generously donated by John White, of Remax Enderby, an NRHA Pewter, and even more cash. Full results of the inaugural Reinin’ In The Sun can be viewed on their website at www.reinininthesun.com.
